Regulated Nervous System = Career Success

I’m excited to write about this subject for many reasons. For one, it has been coming up A LOT over the last few weeks. Additionally, more and more things are starting to click on the subject.

Let’s start here:

“Lawyering is a consistent state of hyper-vigilance and heightened scrutiny that can wreak havoc on your nervous system.”

How to Show up and Shine in Law School with Gratitude, Grit, and Grace by Cherelle Iman (Coming in 2024)

I INSTANTLY sent this quote to my dear friend and her reply was “That’s why you aren’t practicing law!”

Text message stating: 'That's why you aren't practicing law.'

Then, I got looped into post on Instagram talking about stress and the dysregulation of the nervous system. I spent about 2 hours watching videos where Dr. Linnea Passaler spoke about the nervous system and its effect on our ability to function optimally. I immediately pre-ordered her book (scheduled to come out in January 2024) called “Heal Your Nervous System: The 5 Stage Plan To Reverse Nervous System Dysregulation”.

In the middle of all this, I co-presented a workshop with Dr. Sheela Vemu for the Inclusive Teaching Excellence Series at Waubonsee Community College entitled Unraveling Stress, Wellness & Physiology. In this workshop, Dr. Vemu shared the physiological components of stress and I spoke about how we can use different practices to help support our nervous systems so we can handle stress more efficiently.

As more and more things started to click, I realized that I already have been working on my nervous system through my extensive training in Kundalini Yoga. However, it wasn’t until I read Iman’s quote and watched Dr. Linnea’s videos that I realized how deeply intertwined career success is with a healthy, regulated nervous system.

There is so much swirling around in my head and I look forward to going deeper with this material in the weeks to come. For now, though, I leave you with a practice that can help you strengthen your nervous system.
